UK online social network CitySocialising has earned £1 million in equity investment and attracted the backing of tech entrepreneurs Brent Hoberman and Michael Birch at the close of a series A fundraising round.

European VC fund PROFounders Capital, founded by Hoberman and Birch, and whose previous investments include Made.com, TweetDeck and Keynoir, led the fundraising round in the internet company. CitySocialising CEO and founder Sanchita Saha says the investment will be used for the development of its online offering and a mobile product, and the recruitment of a number of senior executives.

Launched in January 2007, CitySocialising has a presence in 50 cities across the UK and more than 100,000 users. The company encourages users to meet online and in person by hosting regular “real-world” events. The London Business Angels network provided early-stage backing to the venture in March 2009.

Saha comments that she hopes to partner with Hoberman and Birch to leverage ‘their collective knowledge and experience in the social and consumer internet space’ to help shape and execute the company’s product and growth strategy.
