A consortium led by titanium specialist Metalysis has won a grant of £862,000 from the government’s Technology Strategy Board (TSB).
South Yorkshire-based Metalysis will use the funding to scale up its technology for the production of titanium powders through a patented process, to which it owns the global rights.
Other members of the consortium are the Universities of Newcastle and Sheffield and TWI, a research and technology organisation.
The TSB grant follows a £5.1 million funding round for Metalysis in May, in which all of the company’s existing venture capital backers reinvested. During the last five years, the company has raised £19 million in venture capital and £4 million in grants.
The next step for Metalysis is to set up a pilot plant in a two-year project intended to prove the commercial quality of its products, according to chief executive Mark Bertolini.
Adds Bertolini, ‘This opens up a new route to manufacturing titanium powder which can be directly consolidated into sheet products whilst delivering massive reductions in capital and operational expenditures, as well as very substantial environmental benefits.’
