British Gas has entered the energy services market following its parent company’s acquisition of an installer and service provider of building control systems.

Centrica has added Building Management System Integrators (BMSi) to its portfolio after agreeing a £7 million cash deal.

The transaction, which includes an additional £3 million earn-out, is part of Centrica’s plan to build British Gas’ energy efficiency and low-carbon capabilities through acquisition.

British Gas managing director Phil Bentley said energy services is a growing market driven by changing customer and business attitudes to reducing energy consumption. “With high energy costs, and with the prospect of new legislation and tighter regulation around businesses’ carbon emissions, we will offer new ways to help our customers cut their energy usage and reduce their carbon footprint.”

The addition of BMSi’s energy services expertise to British Gas’ operations will enable the company to provide new products, such as smart metering to help track energy consumption.

BMSi’s systems improve building energy management performance and help make carbon savings. It currently employs 69 people who serve companies such as Boots, BAA and O2.
