Arena owners SMG Europe acquire CGC Events Ltd.

Venue management business has interests all across Western world.

SMG Europe has acquired hospitality and catering specialists CGC Events, the two parties have announced.

SMG Europe is part of global grand SMG, which is based in the US. The parent company is working on projects throughout America, Middle-East and Australasia. In the UK alone it owns the Metro Arena in Newcastle and Belfast’s Odyssey Arena.

The company boasts a turnover of £45 million – with total revenues of £175 million, under management, from its European arm. It takes control of Leeds-based CGC Events and its 200-strong workforce – which increases to 1,000 at peak times.

CGC itself has an annual turnover of £20 million. It runs catering services at venues across the North of England. SMG will be using the newly-acquired business to complement its own SAVOR catering outfit.

SMG CEO and president Wes Westley said the acquisition of a business based near one of its major venues makes sense as “local knowledge is the foundation of our worldwide success”.

“This acquisition really strengthens our established food and beverage service, SAVOR,” he continued. “As the owner of a number of Europe’s most prestigious venues, we stage some of the world’s biggest acts, so we want to provide our customers with the highest quality experience.

“CGC is undoubtedly the best in its field and will enable us to extend our offering, so we’re delighted to be working alongside the team.”

CGC MD Darran Coulson added members of the business are “very excited” to be joining with SMG.

“Having established an excellent reputation in the north of the country, we’re now looking forward to blending our local knowledge with SMG’s global reach and expertise,” he added.
